The Theological Spine

One Sacrifice for Sins for Ever

  1. The need — sin requires blood (Abel, Lev 17:11).
  2. The substitute — God provides a lamb "in the stead of" the one who deserves death (Isaac, the Passover, every Levitical offering).
  3. The mechanism — the substitute is without blemish (tamiym, H8549), its blood is applied to the offerer or to the mercy seat, and the sin is removed.
  4. The limit — animal blood cannot permanently take away sin (Heb 10:4). The offerings repeat endlessly because no animal is a sufficient substitute for a human soul.
  5. The fulfillment — a body is prepared (Heb 10:5). God's own Son is the Lamb without blemish, the burnt offering wholly consumed, the sin offering "made sin for us," the trespass offering whose soul is the 'asham, the Passover whose blood covers, the scapegoat who bears sins away, the serpent lifted up so that all who look upon him live — and he does it once for all (Heb 10:10).
Hebrews 10:11–12 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: but this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.

"Worthy is the Lamb that was slain."
